The French Quarter, also known as the Vieux Carre, is the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans. First established in 1718 by the French, the neighborhood sits on a crescent of high ground by the Mississippi River and serves as the city’s cultural hub. The neighborhood has a rich and eventful history and is marked by its stunning architecture, which is a blend of French, Creole, Spanish, and American styles. The French Quarter’s European roots manifest themselves in the lush Spanish-influenced walled courtyards and intricate cast-iron balconies. At the center of the neighborhood is New Orleans’s most famous landmark, Jackson Square.

The French Quarter offers visitors a wide variety of different activities and experiences, and has some of the city’s best restaurants, museums, music venues, nightlife, and shopping destinations. Carriage rides and guided walking tours are a great way to soak in the neighborhood’s exotic atmosphere.
